Purpose of the Role
The Investigation Officer is responsible for leading, coordinating and managing investigation activities across Ports and Terminals to prevent financial loss, protect Transnet assets, and ensure compliance with security legislation and ISPS standards. The role includes criminal, internal and strategic investigations, collaboration with law enforcement, and implementation of proactive security risk measures.
Key Responsibilities (Position Outputs)
- Evaluate criminal matters and determine case registration under the Criminal Matters Amendment Act
- Compile full case dockets including impact and identification statements, photo albums and evidence
- Capture and update investigation data on SIMA and shared systems
- Liaise with NPA to ensure correct prosecution, strong evidence, bail opposition and maximum sentencing
- Work closely with SAPS, DPCI (Hawks) and Crime Intelligence on all relevant cases
- Conduct internal, organised crime and high-profile investigations; provide expert court testimony
- Initiate and/or testify in disciplinary hearings and CCMA cases
- Secure, document and preserve evidence for both criminal and internal matters
- Identify security gaps and conduct awareness programmes
- Implement policies, procedures and standards to prevent theft, sabotage, vandalism and fraud
- Provide 24/7 response to all security incidents within assigned area
- Facilitate polygraph testing services and service provider management
- Manage departmental assets and vehicles in line with governance and policy
- Attend SAPS cluster, NFMCCC & case flow management meetings
- Compile monthly investigation and case flow reports
- Present reports/findings to the Security Information Management & Investigations Manager
- Conduct project-based investigations of high-profile cases
- Investigate service provider negligence claims
- Apply Transnet investigations policies and procedures
- Manage evidence storage, exhibit control and disposal in line with SAPS and policy
- Assist with risk assessments and Board of Inquiry (BOI) matters
- Maintain suspect and case database
- Participate in joint SAPS operations including raids on scrap dealers
- Verify and control assets under investigation jurisdiction
- Interrogate suspects, collect intelligence and extract case-related information
- Submit formal investigation reports for approval and action
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
✅ Senior Certificate (Matric)
✅ 1–2 year post-matric qualification in Investigations
✅ Minimum 3 years’ experience in investigations within security/crime prevention
📌 OR 5–7 years’ relevant investigation experience without post-matric qualification
✅ Valid Code B driver’s licence
✅ Able and prepared to drive as required
✅ PSIRA Grade A (advantage) – must be obtained within 3 months if not already held
