Tygerberg Hospital is inviting qualified artisans to apply for the position of Artisan Production Grade A to C (Mechanical). This opportunity is ideal for candidates who hold a relevant Trade Test Certificate and are looking to build or advance their careers within the public healthcare sector.

Successful candidates will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and servicing plant equipment, machinery, pumps, compressors, steam systems, and sterilizing equipment within one of South Africa’s leading hospitals.

Job Overview

Position: Artisan Production (Mechanical)

Salary Scale:

  • Grade A: R253 341 per annum
  • Grade B: R297 249 per annum
  • Grade C: R345 342 per annum

Location: Tygerberg Hospital, Parow Valley, Western Cape

Job Type: Permanent Government Position

Minimum Requirements

Educational Qualification

Applicants must possess:

  • Appropriate Trade Test Certificate in a relevant mechanical field

Experience Requirements

Grade A

  • No experience required

Grade B

  • At least 18 years appropriate and recognisable experience after obtaining the Trade Test Certificate

Grade C

  • At least 34 years appropriate and recognisable experience after obtaining the Trade Test Certificate

Inherent Requirements

  • Valid Code B/EB Driver’s Licence
  • Willingness to perform standby duties
  • Ability to work overtime when required

Knowledge and Skills

Applicants should possess:

  • Mechanical maintenance and repair experience
  • General mechanical repair skills
  • Basic welding abilities
  • Knowledge of machinery and plant equipment
  • Experience with pumps and compressors
  • Knowledge of steam systems and sterilising equipment
  • Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety requirements
  • Knowledge of Machinery Regulations
  • Understanding of NBR and SABA 1475 standards
  • Ability to safely operate tools and equipment
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organisational and planning abilities
  • Ability to work independently and within a team

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Mechanical Maintenance

  • Maintain hospital plant and equipment
  • Perform mechanical repairs and maintenance
  • Conduct inspections and preventative maintenance
  • Repair pumps, compressors and related equipment

Equipment Servicing

  • Service steam systems
  • Maintain sterilising equipment
  • Ensure machinery operates efficiently
  • Identify and resolve equipment faults

Administrative Functions

  • Complete maintenance records
  • Maintain repair documentation
  • Assist with compliance reporting
  • Support departmental administration

Training and Support

  • Assist with skills transfer
  • Support junior staff where required
  • Comply with hospital maintenance procedures
  • Follow Occupational Health and Safety standards
