Job Description

The Border Management Authority (BMA) is inviting suitably qualified candidates to apply for the position of Specialist Network Management within the Information Communication and Technology – Infrastructure and Operations Department.

This is a permanent position based in Centurion, offering a salary of R1,074,389.53 – R1,210,428.88.

Applicants must have Grade 12, an NQF Level 7 qualification in Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related field, relevant professional certification and 5 years’ experience at junior management level.

Job Overview

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have:

• Matric / Grade 12
• Undergraduate qualification at NQF Level 7, as recognised by SAQA, in:
  • Information Technology
  • Computer Engineering
  • Computer Science
  • Or a related qualification
• Any of the following certificates:
  • ITIL Foundation
  • Microsoft Azure
  • Windows Server

A Linux or VMware Certificate will be advantageous.

Minimum Experience

Applicants must have:

• 5 years’ experience at junior management level in IT Management, IT Governance, ICT Network and Security or IT Operations.

Network Design and Optimisation

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Designing, configuring and implementing BMA’s network infrastructure according to business requirements.
• Collaborating with other ICT teams to facilitate knowledge sharing and network optimisation.
• Researching and providing technical input into strategic network infrastructure decisions.
• Managing infrastructure maintenance, including system patches and upgrades.
• Monitoring network infrastructure and driving stability through corporate governance.
• Maintaining network infrastructure documentation.
• Maximising performance across LAN, WAN, wireless and VPN technologies.
• Troubleshooting network problems and outages.
• Scheduling network upgrades.
• Implementing and monitoring redundant network links for critical sites.
• Testing backup network links to support business continuity.
• Engaging and negotiating with vendors, contractors and service providers.

Network and Operational Support

Key responsibilities include:

• Providing operational support across the network environment.
• Resolving incidents and service requests through service management tools.
• Performing daily system monitoring.
• Monitoring hardware, servers, switches, routers and Wi-Fi systems.
• Configuring and installing hosted VoIP, Unified Communications and Video Conferencing solutions.
• Supporting wireless design, bandwidth optimisation and WAN acceleration tools.
• Configuring and troubleshooting routers, switches, firewalls and load balancers.
• Conducting network capacity planning.
• Performing security and virus monitoring.
• Supporting high availability and disaster recovery solutions.
• Providing technical support during and after business hours when required.

Cybersecurity Management

The Specialist Network Management will also assist with:

• Monitoring data and content processed through BMA systems.
• Firewall administration
• Monitoring security updates, patches and firmware upgrades.
• Monitoring access requests to network and business systems.
• Implementing approved ICT policies, plans and Standard Operating Procedures.
• Creating access rules for users and consultants.
• Installing, maintaining and supporting antivirus and anti-spam systems.
• Scheduling antivirus updates across servers and end-user devices.
• Performing regular penetration tests to assess cybersecurity resilience.

Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity

Responsibilities include:

• Preparing disaster recovery sites for hosted, cloud and on-premise business systems.
• Supporting backup and migration of data to disaster recovery sites.
• Scheduling and monitoring disaster recovery drills.
• Supporting the ICT Service Continuity Plan.
• Supporting the Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP).
• Supporting the Business Continuity Plan (BCP).
• Maintaining up-to-date BMA network architecture.
• Preparing monthly Systems Availability Reports.
• Preparing monthly Service Desk reports.

Stakeholder Management

The successful candidate will:

• Build and maintain relationships with BMA business units.
• Provide guidance on ICT Network and Security matters.
• Participate in organisational committees and task teams when required.
• Attend meetings and present findings and business cases.
• Communicate progress and challenges to relevant stakeholders.
• Participate in industry forums, conferences and workshops.

Risk and Compliance

Responsibilities include:

• Supporting fraud controls and risk prevention principles.
• Supporting internal and external audit requirements.
• Maintaining quality risk management standards.
• Maintaining and enforcing Service Level Agreements.
• Reviewing relevant Standard Operating Procedures.
• Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, policies and organisational procedures.
