Department: Department of Correctional Services
Position: Chairperson (Parole Board)
Term of Office: Five (5) Years (or as determined by the Minister in terms of Section 74(7) of the Correctional Services Act, Act 111 of 1998)

Salary

Members of the Board will be remunerated on monthly rates based on Category D, Sub-category D1 of the remuneration of statutory boards as determined by the National Treasury.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • A recognised NQF Level 7 qualification in:
    • Criminal Justice
    • Social Sciences
    • Or a related field
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a management or decision-making position.
  • Demonstrated ability to make evidence-based decisions by analysing complex information.
  • Strong judgement and the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills.
  • Excellent written report-writing skills.
  • High standards of integrity, fairness and professionalism.
  • Strong organisational, administrative and time management skills.
  • Understanding of the criminal justice system and the importance of victims’ perspectives.

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will:

  • Analyse and evaluate offender information to assess risk.
  • Decide whether offenders can safely be released into the community.
  • Chair and oversee parole hearings.
  • Work collaboratively with other Parole Board members.
  • Prepare and draft reports, summaries and parole decisions.
  • Represent the Parole Board during hearings and official engagements.
  • Coordinate administrative processes related to hearings and parole matters.
  • Promote public awareness regarding parole processes.
  • Facilitate victim participation during parole hearings where applicable.
