Job Description

Anglo American is recruiting a Mining Engineer for Kumba Iron Ore in Kathu, South Africa. This is a permanent position within the Mining area and is classified at Associate level.

The Mining Engineer will provide mine-planning and design expertise, including developing and governing Mine Activity Designs and deployment strategies to support safe, sustainable and efficient mining operations.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • National Diploma in Mining Engineering or equivalent
  • BTech / Degree in Mining Engineering
  • South African Driver’s Licence
  • 3–5 years’ experience in production, load and haul operations, mine planning and pit layout

Technical Knowledge

Candidates should have knowledge and understanding of:

  • Mining engineering principles
  • Geology
  • Geotechnical engineering
  • Hydrogeology
  • Mineral processing
  • Opencast iron ore mining
  • Beneficiation processes
  • Mine planning and design software processes and methodologies
  • Relevant safety legislation, including the MHSA
  • Environmental regulations and sustainable mining practices
  • Mining methods, equipment and technology
  • Project management
  • Financial analysis
  • Health, safety and environmental stewardship principles

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Develop and maintain mine activity and block designs
  • Review and optimise block designs with relevant stakeholders
  • Identify infrastructure requirements for operational plans
  • Design and maintain 3D infrastructure layouts, including haul roads, ramps, intersections, power and water reticulation
  • Maintain Mine Activity Design documentation and records
  • Align mine designs and deployment strategies with operational schedules
  • Translate deployment strategies into graphical plans
  • Conduct site visits to compare planned and actual deployment activities
  • Monitor performance against approved designs and planning targets
  • Conduct reconciliation activities and identify performance variances
  • Identify risks, opportunities and corrective actions
  • Support recovery plans when performance falls below target
  • Conduct quarterly MAD reconciliations
  • Participate in MAD review meetings
  • Prepare and present technical planning information
  • Provide technical support for the implementation of mine plans

The Mining Engineer will help maintain a safe and healthy working environment for employees and contractors while ensuring environmental impacts remain within statutory requirements.
