Job Overview

The Supply Chain Planning Manager drives the implementation of operating plans within planning teams to achieve strategic business objectives. This role focuses on improving sales, reducing waste, delivering supply chain profitability projects, and ensuring effective communication across cross-functional teams and external stakeholders. The manager leads planning teams, enforces standardized processes, and contributes to the execution of sales strategies and trade plans.


Key Responsibilities

Supply Chain Profitability

  • Understand value chain cost and income components and influence these through planning activities.
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction and implement operational changes to reduce distribution costs without negatively impacting KPIs (waste, availability, sales).
  • Highlight system, process, report, and resource requirements for teams to improve value chain efficiency and vendor income projects.
  • Develop and maintain trust-based relationships with vendors.
  • Define and implement efficiency initiatives with vendors for joint financial benefit.

Strategic Sales Planning

  • Ensure compliance with promotion and event planning processes.
  • Provide guidance to teams on generating sales plans per category.
  • Collaborate with Commercial to achieve planning budgets and targets.
  • Escalate significant differences between sales targets, commercial sales plans, and retail sales forecasts.
  • Track category planning numbers, highlight risks, and provide input on promo, pricing, and product range based on performance and profitability.

Strategic Operational Execution

  • Guide planners on executing category-specific sales plans.
  • Ensure the use of standardized planning and reporting tools for accurate sales planning and execution.
  • Track KPI performance, highlight risks, and implement solutions to improve forecast accuracy.

Continuous Improvement & Standardization

  • Work with planning HOD to improve processes, tools, reports, and systems.
  • Define and quantify business impact of improvement initiatives.
  • Implement new processes, tools, and reports within operational teams.
  • Create annual and quarterly operating plans aligned with supply chain strategy.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to create accurate sales plans reflecting business and promotional strategies.
  • Work with Commercial and technical teams to ensure accurate SAP data and store shelf-life maintenance.
  • Support new product launches and T-4 promotional planning with vendors.
  • Proactively address poor strike rates and identify mitigation strategies.

Team Leadership & People Development

  • Provide clear direction, guidance, and support for team execution.
  • Identify training opportunities through observation or consultation with teams.
  • Foster a motivational and professional working environment for all planning teams.

Minimum Requirements

  • BCom Logistics, or Degree in Quantitative Analytics, Operational Research, Industrial Engineering, or Applied Mathematics.
  • 2+ years supply chain planning experience, including at least 1 year within Pick n Pay.
  • Knowledge of SAP ERP, F&R, Analysis, Power BI, and other planning IT tools.
  • Understanding of IT systems, process automation, economics, and market dynamics.
  • Knowledge of Commercial Strategy, budgeting, DC, and Store Operations.
  • Understanding of divisional processes, business/system rules, and cross-functional collaboration.
