Job Description

South African National Parks (SANParks) is inviting applications for a Field Ranger position at Addo Elephant National Park – Darlington Dam Section.

The successful candidate will report to the Field Ranger Sergeant and will assist with law enforcement, anti-poaching operations, conservation activities, animal management, fence patrols and the maintenance of conservation infrastructure.

The position offers an annual package of R153,593.79 – R206,639.15 at Paterson Grade B3.

SANParks Field Ranger Job Overview

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

• Grade 12 / Matric or equivalent NQF Level 4
• NQF Level 2 National Certificate in Conservation Guardianship
• On-the-job training following successful completion of Basic Field Ranger Training
• 1–2 years’ relevant experience as an Armed Environmental Monitor, Field Guard or within Conservation
• Working knowledge of relevant Conservation Legislation
• Valid Code 8 driver’s licence
• Computer literacy
• Basic technical skills
• NQF Level 4 Handle and Use a Self-Loading Rifle Firearm Proficiency
• At least 60% physical fitness and willingness to undergo a fitness test before the interview
• Willingness to undergo a medical examination

Criminal checks will be conducted on the successful candidate. A SAPS criminal record should be attached if available.

Firearm Proficiency Requirements

Applicants must provide the required firearm proficiency documentation, including:

• Valid SAPS Competency Certificate
• Original Training Competency Certificate for Business Unit Standards
• Statement of results indicating the unit standards for Law and Business Purpose Unit Standards

Desirable Qualifications

The following qualifications are desirable:

• National Diploma in Nature Conservation
• Certificate in Resource Guardianship (NQF Level 5) or equivalent
• EMI Grade 5 designation is compulsory, or the successful candidate must qualify within the stipulated period

Key Responsibilities

The successful Field Ranger will be responsible for:

• Participating in regular law-enforcement patrols on foot, including difficult and mountainous terrain.
• Participating in anti-poaching operations throughout Addo Elephant National Park.
• Working flexi-time, night shifts and overtime when required.
• Participating in clandestine and camping deployments and observation posts in support of anti-poaching operations.
• Assisting with the control, capture, handling and transportation of animals.
• Following correct procedures for documenting and reporting law-enforcement activities.
• Assisting with natural resource management, including invasive plants, alien biota, soil erosion and fire management.
• Gathering information for management plans using electronic devices.
• Maintaining records and preparing reports.
• Capturing field data electronically, including situational reports.
• Assisting with fauna management and water provision.
• Assisting with visitor behaviour and access control.
• Assisting with the control of EPWP contractors’ movement within the park.
• Conducting fence patrols and fence maintenance.
• Assisting with general maintenance of conservation infrastructure, including generators, pumps and storerooms.
• Assisting with the maintenance and management of assets.

Accommodation and Benefits

The successful candidate will be required to reside within the park, and official accommodation will be provided.

The remuneration package includes a basic salary based on the salary scale for a Paterson B3 position, together with allowances and benefits as specified in the SANParks HR Tariff Document and Conditions of Services.
