Requirements

  • Senior Certificate / Grade 12
  • Ambulance Emergency Assistant qualification
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Ambulance Emergency Assistant
  • Current HPCSA registration (2025)
  • Unendorsed driver’s licence (C1)
  • Valid Professional Driver’s Permit (PrDP) for transporting patients
  • Assessment test and driving test required

Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

The successful candidates will report to the EMS Station Manager: Emergency Medical Services and be responsible for providing pre-hospital treatment within the Intermediate Life Support (ILS) scope and transporting patients to appropriate health facilities to minimize loss of life.

Applicants must:

  • Possess knowledge of Intermediate Life Support Protocols
  • Understand EMS operations and procedures
  • Have knowledge of basic medical rescue techniques
  • Be familiar with Rules and Regulations of the Road Traffic Ordinance
  • Demonstrate good communication and practical patient management skills
  • Be able to implement emergency procedures and work effectively under pressure
  • Be capable of operating in various EMS environments such as:
    • Emergency Ambulances
    • Obstetric Ambulances
    • Inter-facility Ambulances
    • Communication Centres
    • Patient Transport Services (as deployed by EMS management)

Duties

  • Treat, stabilize, and transport patients according to the Intermediate Life Support scope of practice (as per HPCSA protocols).
  • Respond to emergency calls dispatched by the Communication Centre or other medical professionals.
  • Maintain clinical excellence in line with quality standards and Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
  • Check and maintain allocated vehicle and medical equipment daily; complete the checklist and report any losses or damages to the Shift Leader.
  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain the vehicle interior/exterior in good condition.
  • Replenish surgical sundries, medical gases, and ensure all stock items are within expiry.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the EMS station.
  • Submit required paperwork to the Shift Leader before the end of each shift.
  • Hand over the vehicle and equipment to the next shift fully replenished and operational.
  • Adhere to EMS Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs).
  • Participate in training, quality assurance, and performance improvement programmes.
  • Perform additional duties as delegated by the supervisor.
  • Candidates must be mentally and physically fit and willing to work shifts.
