SAPS Special Task Force (STF) Recruitment 2026/2027 – Selection 40

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has officially opened applications for the Special Task Force (STF) Recruitment Programme 2026/2027 – Selection 40.

The STF is one of South Africa’s most elite tactical units, responsible for high-risk operations such as counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, advanced urban operations, and VIP protection.

This opportunity is available to qualifying SAPS members who are ready to take their policing careers to the highest level.

About the SAPS Special Task Force

The Special Task Force is a highly trained unit that performs specialized operations, including:

  • Counter-terrorism
  • Hostage rescue
  • Urban tactical operations
  • Waterborne operations
  • Advanced parachuting
  • Explosive methods of entry
  • VIP protection

Successful candidates will undergo an intensive 18-month training programme.


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be a permanent functional member of SAPS
  • Have completed Basic Police Training
  • Have at least 2 years of operational experience
  • Hold a valid driver’s licence
  • Be between 21 and 35 years old
  • Be medically and psychologically fit
  • Pass security vetting
  • Have no criminal or disciplinary record
  • Be willing to work irregular hours and deploy anywhere in South Africa

STF Training Programme Includes

  • Provincial pre-selection
  • Physical preparation and conditioning
  • Selection (Vasbyt)
  • Level 3 Medical
  • Advanced weapon proficiency
  • Rural and urban operations
  • Survival training
  • Counter-terrorism and hostage rescue
  • Basic and advanced parachuting
  • Waterborne operations
  • Tactical explosives
  • High-speed and 4×4 driving
  • VIP protection

Appointment After Training

Candidates who successfully complete the programme will be appointed as STF Operators and may be posted to:

  • Pretoria
  • Durban
  • Cape Town

Placement will depend on operational requirements and not personal preference.
