🔹 POST 35/125: Security Officer – Dog Handler (CB1-1)

Note: Appointment under the Correctional Services Act

✅ Requirements:

• Grade 12
• Successful completion of the Correctional Science Learnership/Basic Training

Competencies & Attributes:

• Strong interpersonal skills (handling requests and troublesome offenders)
• Ability to counsel agitated or suicidal offenders
• Firefighting and first aid skills
• Passion for working with dogs
• Listening and communication skills
• Tactful and reliable
• Problem-solving and analytical ability

📌 Duties:

• Control access and patrol prison grounds
• Prevent entry/removal of unauthorized items
• Prevent unauthorized contact with offenders
• Activate emergency measures when needed to prevent escapes, assaults, and injuries
• Prevent theft of government property
• Patrol accommodation areas, kitchens, and work sections (day and night shifts) to prevent escapes and smuggling
• Guard offenders at work areas and ensure their safety
• Conduct searches of offenders and assign dogs to tracks when needed
• Provide further training of service dogs and ensure safety of helpers at training venues
• Evaluate dogs (hands-on approach) and provide physical care
• Identify, isolate, and ensure prompt treatment for sick/injured dogs (including veterinary transport)
• Ensure dogs are properly fed according to rations and have regular access to clean water
• Maintain daily cleaning of kennels
